Nigeria Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface once again watched from the bench as Bayer Leverkusen dropped further points in the Bundesliga title race after a shock defeat at home to Werder Bremen.

It's been a challenging time for Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface and his Bayer Leverkusen side, as they suffered their second consecutive defeat in four days.

This time, they fell to a 2-0 loss at home to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, with Boniface watching from the bench once again.

The Nigerian forward has struggled to regain his starting role since returning from injury, and his absence from the starting lineup has been a recurring theme in recent matches.

Leverkusen's woes began with a heavy defeat to rivals Bayern Munich in the Champions League midweek, a game where Boniface was an unused substitute.

Despite Xabi Alonso's optimism about the team's mood and focus, Leverkusen failed to bounce back against Werder Bremen.

The match saw significant rotation, with Boniface, Florian Wirtz, and Jeremie Frimpong among those rested ahead of their crucial Champions League second-leg tie against Bayern Munich.

The game against Werder Bremen was marked by Leverkusen's inability to create meaningful scoring opportunities despite dominating possession.

Werder's high press and solid defense proved too much for the hosts, who were caught off guard early on.

Romano Schmid scored the opener for Werder after just seven minutes, and despite Leverkusen's efforts, they could not find an equaliser.

The visitors' defense held firm, and they sealed the win with a late goal from Njinmah in stoppage time.

What it means to Bremen

Boniface's current role as a backup option is largely due to a combination of factors. Since his return from injury in late January, he has managed only 141 minutes across seven league matches.

The team's tactical shift under Alonso has favoured a more fluid attacking setup, which has made it difficult for Boniface to fit in.

Victor Boniface has failed to start any of the last four matches.

Additionally, the impressive form of other attackers, such as Patrick Schick and Nathan Tella, has limited Boniface's opportunities to reclaim his starting spot.

Despite these challenges, Boniface remains committed to Leverkusen after a failed transfer to Al Nassr earlier this year.

Alonso has expressed confidence in Boniface's ability to fight for his place in the team, emphasising that he feels comfortable at the club.

However, with Leverkusen facing a tough Champions League tie and trailing Bayern Munich by eight points in the Bundesliga, Boniface will need to adapt quickly to regain his prominence in the squad.

Boniface has scored 7 goals this season in the Bundesliga.

His contributions have been crucial, but the current dynamics of the team and the intense competition for starting roles mean he must work harder to regain his status as a key player.
