Mr Europa League Victor Boniface was on target again in Europe but his goal was not enough for Union St. Gilloise at Bayer Leverkusen.
Florian Writz was the hero of the day as Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to hold Union St Gilloise in the Europa League.
The talented youngster denied Nigerian forward Victor Boniface glory as both sides shared the spoils following a 1-1 draw in their Europa League quarterfinal first leg.
Boniface gave Union G the perfect start when he netted the opener to put them ahead in the tie at the Bay Arena on Thursday night.
It was his sixth goal of the season in UEFA’s second-tier competition this season for his Belgian club.
However, his effort was not enough to give Union the advantage heading into the second leg as Writz netted a stunning equaliser to force a share of the spoils.
The match in brief
Both teams came into the encounter at the back on unbeaten runs in their last five matches.
But the home side started on a positive note and dominated most of the game at the Arena.
Bayer created the most chances, and attempted the most shots but failed to make any of that counter on the night against their visitors.
After the a barren first half display from both sides, it was Union G who broke the deadlock when main man Boniface fired them ahead five minutes after the restart.
Right minutes before time, however, Bayer got a deserved equaliser from the talented Writz who rifled home an excellent goal.
With the result, it is all to play for these two heading into the second leg in Belgium.
