Fernandes on Manchester United
The Portuguese superstar was left frustrated after United survived a scare from the League One side to reach the fifth round despite taking a 2-0 lead.
Bruno fired United ahead before Kobbie Mainoo’s first senior goal doubled the advantage to make it 2-0 at the break.
However, despite creating chances to extend their lead, it was the fourth-division club that shocked the Red Devils with two stunning goals to level to score.
Fernandes was anything but impressed to see the Reds allow the 16th-placed team in League One to find a way back into the game, with the skipper accusing his United teammates of being selfish.
“It was not the perfect result for us, we didn’t want to concede goals,” Fernandes said after the game per a report on the United website.
“We had chances to make it 3-0 but, when you get to 2-0 in these kinds of games, everyone wants to try to score, get their goal and everything, and sometimes you don’t get the best decision for the team,”.
“We didn’t. They got to 2-1, obviously, [with] a bit of belief, second half, they start and they get a goal, but I think, after, we did a great job to close the game.”
Erik Ten Hag’s Devils went on to add two more goals through Brazilian forward, Antony and Rasmus Hojlund to wrap up the win and book a spot in the fifth round.
United picking up the win despite the late wobble is a sign of progress, but Fernandes knows they must be more clinical with opportunities to avoid such nervous endings in future.
