Former Harambee Stars and Luo Union FC defender Edward Kiiza Wakuze is remembered as a legendary player and coach who inspired many.

Former Luo Union and Harambee Stars defender Edward Kiiza Wakuze will be laid to rest on May 18 at his home in Malaa, Machakos County.

A requiem service will be held in his honour at St Stephen's Anglican Church, Jogoo Road, Nairobi, on May 17, starting from 11am.

The 68-year-old succumbed to complications from a stroke on April 30 after being admitted to the ICU at Kenyatta National Hospital for three days.

Noordinne Taib Koor, a former Football Kenya Federation treasurer, praised the late Kiiza as a remarkable footballer and coach who was always willing to guide others.

"He will forever remain a legend," Koor shared as per Daily Nation.

Kiiza earned recognition for his contributions to the Harambee Stars and the Luo Union FC which was later renamed Re-Union.

He was called up to the national team for the first time in 1976, lining up alongside the likes of James Siang'a, Allan Thigo, John Nyawanga, and William Chege Ouma.

Kiiza also played for Kaloleni Welfare FC and Black Mamba, solidifying his reputation as a versatile defender capable of pushing forward and finding the net.

Born to a Kenyan mother, Josephine Nduta Wakuze, and a Ugandan father, Serwano Wakuze, Kiiza was the seventh child in the family.

He studied at St John Primary School in Kaloleni before securing admission to the prestigious Starehe Boys Centre in Nairobi.

Unfortunately health challenges plagued his later years as he also suffered a mild stroke in July of the previous year.
