Bright Stars are at the foot of an eight team midfield battle in 11th position, and are six points ahead of Busoga which is one of the four teams locked in a survival battle.
Busoga United visit Soltilo Bright Stars at the Kavumba Recreation Grounds on Wednesday lunchtime kickoff with the opportunity to significantly move away from the StarTimes Uganda Premier League relegation zone.
Bright Stars are at the foot of an eight-team midfield battle in 11th position and are six points ahead of Busoga, which is one of the four teams locked in a survival battle.
There have been times this season when Busoga has looked particularly doomed, but in what is becoming second nature to them, they are set to pull off another great escape.
Vincent Lukyamuzi's side appears to have turned a corner since the turn of the year, suffering only three defeats since that incredible 1-0 victory over title chasers Vipers SC to cap off December.
Since then, they have collected impressive victories over URA and held cross-town rivals BUL FC. At the same time, they have significantly picked up wins over fellow relegation strugglers Blacks Power, UPDF and most recently, Onduparaka.
With a four-point gap over the last relegation place, Busoga is a defeat from falling back into the relegation battle. Yet, every triumph from here onwards will move them closer to survival.
On the other hand, Bright Stars have had periods where they have either drastically underperformed or not got the rewards that some of their encouraging performances have deserved.
Their most fulfilling result of the season was that 1-0 victory over KCCA FC in the Stanbic Uganda Cup quarter-finals.
It helped them end a four-game losing run in the league, and it could be a springboard to their season, setting them on a three-game unbeaten run with back-to-back draws to Express and BUL.
The disappointment, though, is that in both stalemates, they threw away leads, which is a headache for the coaching staff.
"We are very hungry for a victory. It has been long since we last had a win at home," Bright Stars assistant coach Tom Ssali said ahead of the game.
"We respect them (Busoga United). But we have our agenda and objective for the game, and we should be giving it our best shot for the three points," he added.
Bright Stars will be without captain and leading striker Nelson Ssenkatuka for the game, together with midfielder Kato Kizanyiro.
It will be the 13th league meeting between the two sides, with Bright Stars still waiting to suffer a home defeat against Busoga since their promotion in 2016.
Bright Stars have also not suffered a defeat to Busoga since back-to-back losses to their visitors in 2019. Ibrahim Kaside's solo goal earned Bright Stars a 1-0 victory the last time these two sides met in December 2022.
