For Uganda, league champions Vipers SC and KCCA FC, who finished second, will feature in the CAF Confederation Cup and Champions League, respectively.

The 60th edition of the CAF interclub competitions returns as African clubs across the continent feature in the prestigious CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup tournaments, respectively.

For both competitions, the preliminary round first leg ties take centre stage this Friday with three Uganda Cranes internationals in action.

Taddeo Lwanga is expected to lead APR FC in Rwanda as they take on Somalia’s Gaadiidka FC at the Pele Stadium Kigali in the CAF CL preliminary round.

The former Vipers SC and Simba SC combative midfielder is expected to provide experience and leadership for the army side, who are bidding to reach the group stages for the first time.

In Tanzania, Khalid Aucho and Gift Fred are expected to lead ‘Tiimu ya Wanainchi’ against Djibouti’s Ali Sabieh as the side bids to reach the group stages for the first time since 1998.

Aucho was part of the Young Africans side that made history by reaching the CAF Confederation Cup final last season, losing out on the away goals rule against Algeria’s USM Alger.

The Tanzanian back-to-back domestic treble champions have set their sights on reaching the CAF CL group stages, having put up an excellent performance when they reached the CAF Confederation Cup final last season.

Angel Gamondi’s side received a significant boost after CAF confirmed that both legs would be played at the Chamazi Complex, home to Azam FC.

Singida Big Stars, home to Ugandan coaches Matia Lule, goalkeeper coach Steven Billy Kiggundu and left back Shafik Batambuze will also be in action against JKU FC from Zanzibar.
