Africa will have at least nine slots in the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted in USA, Canada and Mexico.
The CAF executive committee will decide the date and format for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Thursday in Algeria.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe will chair the meeting that will happen a day before the climax of the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
“The Executive Committee will discuss a number of matters on the agenda, including the dates and format of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers, bids for the CAF Women’s Champions League 2023, and Coaching/Development Courses that will be rolled out in Member Associations in line with CAF’s commitment to football development in Africa,” CAF announced.
The closed-door meeting will also receive a “status update on upcoming 45th Ordinary General Assembly and TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (“CAN”) Côte d’Ivoire 2023”.
Expanded world cup
The 2026 World Cup will be the first to be co-hosted by three countries – USA, Mexico and Canada.
It will also be the first to host the expanded 48-team tournament; Africa has been allocated at least 9 slots plus one through the intercontinental playoffs.
