Fazila Ikwaput left Ugandan football fans with something to smile about after emerging top scorer of the CECAFA zonal qualifiers of the CAF Women’s Champions League despite an under-par performance from Kampala Queens.

The eight goals were not matched even by the evergreen Loza Abera, who managed to score in each of the five games before the final.

Abera finished second with five goals, extending her record in the CECAFA zonal qualifier of the CAF Women’s Champions League to a whopping 24 in three editions.

Kenyan striker Teopister Situma, who played for Buja Queens, was tied on three goals together with Commercial Bank of Ethiopia’s duo Ariet Adong and Aregash Tadesse.

Controversy

There was a moment for murmuring as the stadium announcer at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru named the most valuable player.

The committee chose Tanzanian striker Abdallah Situmai as the best player of the tournament despite scoring only one goal.

The striker’s activity in the final was minimal as her teammate Najiat Abass Idrisa did all the donkey work to stop Ethiopia’s Loza Abera and Tadesse Aregash’s rampant assault that often ended in one-on-one situations.

To many, besides their goals and assists, Abera and Aregash were the most consistent and entertaining players throughout the tournament despite succumbing to Idrissa’s heroics.
