Having finished as two of the best four losers at the 2022 WAFCON quarterfinals, Cameroon and Senegal were offered another lifeline at qualifying for the Women's World Cup.
Africa's 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup hopefuls Cameroon, and Senegal, suffered different fates on Saturday, as the inter-confederation play-offs got underway.
Following the expansion of the 2023 Women's World Cup to 32 teams, the inter-confederation qualifying play-offs is to determine the final three qualification spots for the Australia/New Zealand-hosted tournament.
Having finished as two of the best four losers in the quarterfinals of last year's Women's African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Cameroon and Senegal were offered another lifeline at going to the world party.
Cameroon to play Portugal in first final
Cameroon earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory against Thailand and will face Portugal in Hamilton on Wednesday in a bid to secure one of the three remaining spots at the July 20 to August 20 World Cup.
Ajara Nchout's square ball allowed Gabrielle Onguene to score the game's first goal in the 79th minute, and three minutes later she scored again to seal the victory.
Deep into stoppage time, Cameroon were reduced to 10 players after goalkeeper Ange Bawou was dismissed following a protracted VAR review for a foul on Jiraporn Mongkoldee.
Senegal fall to Haiti in battle for second final
Earlier, Haiti earned a comprehensive win after storming to a 4-0 win over Senegal.
Roselord Borgella scored twice while Kethna Louis and Nerilia Mondesir bagged a goal each at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, enough to see Haiti move on to Wednesday's final where they will take on Chile in Auckland.
