The CECAFA Kagame Cup returns after a two-year hiatus promising an exciting preseason platform with guest teams and top clubs.
The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has announced that the prestigious Kagame Cup will make its return this July after a two-year break.
Scheduled to run from July 20th to August 4th, 2024, the tournament will be hosted by Tanzania promising a thrilling preseason competition for the top football clubs in East and Central Africa.

The body decided to do away with the competition for the second year in a row.
The CECAFA Executive Director, John Auka Gecheo confirmed the tournament's revival, emphasizing its importance in preparing teams for major upcoming competitions.
“We are glad that this tournament will be returning after two years to provide a brilliant preseason platform for the teams to prepare better before the start of the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League, CAF Confederations Cup and the different Leagues back home,” said Gecheo.
The football administrator further noted that the inclusion of guest teams alongside the champions from the 12 member associations including Zanzibar.
The Kagame Cup, last held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 2021, saw Uganda’s Express FC clinching the title with a narrow 1-0 victory over the guest team Nyasa Big Bullets from Malawi.

CECAFA has given an insight into the difficulties being experienced by its premier club competition Kagame Cup which has not been held since 2021.
Tanzania’s Simba SC holds the record for the most Kagame Cup titles, having lifted the trophy six times.
They are closely followed by Young Africans SC (Tanzania) and Tusker FC (Kenya), who have each won five times. Other notable winners include APR FC (Rwanda), Al Merriekh (Sudan), SC Villa (Uganda), and Kenya’s Gor Mahia FC all having claimed the title three times each.
