Ugly scenes were witnessed at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam as impatient supporters tried to gain entry into the match venue
Chaos were witnessed at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday as Yanga fans attempted to force their way into the stadium just hours to the CAF Champions League final first leg against USM Alger.
According to reports in Tanzanian media, a heavy downpour saw impatient fans try to gain entry into the stadium without tickets, leading to ugly scenes at the match venue.
It is claimed that fans had waited long to get tickets and after the rains, they tried to get into the stadium, overwhelming security personnel who could only watch as the supporters jostled in an effort to get into the stadium.
Yanga host Algeria’s USM Alger seeking to gain first leg advantage in the final before the away leg in Algiers next week.
The Tanzanian champions have been on a good run in the competition, avoiding defeat in all home matches, and will be counting on the great form against the Algerian side.
Yanga made history by becoming the first Tanzanian side to reach a continental final following their 4-1 aggregate win over South Africa’s Marumo Gallants in the semi-final and can join Kenya’s Gor Mahia (1987) and Al-Merreikh (1989) of Sudan as the only East African countries to have won a continental title.
