The 21-year-old shone for Argentina in Qatar 2022, lifting the trophy and being named Young Player of the Tournament, attracting the West London club among others.

Many reports, including from transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, report that Chelsea have reached an agreement with Benfica for the transfer of Enzo Fernandez, and they are said to have managed to get it done just before the close of the transfer window.
Chelsea have gone on a spending spree since the takeover by the Todd Boehly-led consortium, and even in the usually quiet January transfer window, they have managed to make big splashes, most notably with the signing of Mykhailo Mudryk and the rather generous fee paid to Atletico Madrid for a short-term loan of Joao Felix.

However, despite all the signings Chelsea have made this window, Enzo Fernandez remained a target throughout, with Clearlake Investment's co-founder, Behdad Egbali, one of the companies in the consortium that owns Chelsea, said to have spearheaded the negotiations himself.

Chelsea were said to have previously reached an agreement to sign Enzo, but the deal fell through to the dismay of the player who was pushing for the move.
The Blues went back to the negotiation table and, for days, could not reach an agreement with Benfica on a payment structure.
A deal is now said to have been made, with the player already having his medicals done ahead of the move.
