The former Harambee Stars midfielder has been taking up a coaching role at Nairobi City Stars as he continues to return to full fitness.

Nairobi City Stars midfielder Peter “Pinchez” Opiyo believes Nairobi City Stars must learn how to control games over the whole duration of the match and not just in spells if they are to become a more consistent machine in the future.

Stars played against Talanta at the Kasarani Annex on Tuesday afternoon and were leading 2-0 thanks to a brace by Kevin Etemesi, but blew their lead and allowed the Ken Kenyatta-coached outfit back into the game.

Opiyo, who has taken more of a player-coaching role with City Stars as he continues to return to full fitness, completed his CAF ‘D’ coaching course in March.

The former Harambee Stars midfielder says he was pleased with the way the Simba wa Nairobi controlled proceedings against FC Talanta in the opening moments of the match, but was unpleased by the manner in which they lost control of it.

“ We did everything right in the first half. We attacked, we possessed well, and never allowed our opponents into the game in the first 60 minutes,” he said.

“In the second half, we allowed them to get into the game which was not right at all on our part, and allowed them to get back into the game. We need to do better.”

Opiyo was forced out of training days before a road trip to Kakamega Homeboyz in mid-February and has since opted to sample things on the other side – the technical bench.

“I love being on the pitch, but with an injury, there is so much that you can do till the day you heal. This is a great opportunity to learn the ropes of coaching and more so from my former teammate and captain at Thika United, Muyoti,” Opiyo said.

“I now sit on the bench on game days which is a strange place to be considering I am still an active player. But it gives me a whole new view of the game. On training days I conduct sessions as instructed by Muyoti.

“That said, I wish to make the most out of this chance to understand coaching which will be of great value to the team when I return to the pitch, and in the future when I will not be on the pitch,” added Opiyo.

Opiyo last featured for the club against Kenya Police in the first week of February.
