Interestingly, Ronnie Kalema, the FUFA Executive member revealed that the decision was made during the 98th FUFA Ordinary General Assembly held in Gulu in October 2022.
The recent sudden withdrawal of support by FUFA to clubs set to represent Uganda in the CAF interclub competitions has created divided opinions, with many wondering when the decision was arrived at.
Interestingly, Ronnie Kalema, the FUFA Executive member revealed that the decision was made during the 98th FUFA Ordinary General Assembly held in Gulu in October 2022.
“The decision was arrived at during the general assembly in Gulu, and all the clubs were there,” Kalema told NBS Sport this morning on Friday.
“It was based on the feedback we got from our members who went for a proposal of supporting all league clubs and not only two.”
“So, each Uganda Premier League club will now receive Shs50M through the club development fund; FUFA spent Shs518M on travel for Vipers and BUL FC alone in 2023.
“So, the decision is a bigger picture because we are now going to spend 800M on all the top-flight clubs. Therefore, it’s not true that FUFA is not supporting clubs.”
What are the clubs saying?
Pulse Sports reached out to a few club officials who shared their opinions on condition of anonymity.
One revealed they don’t remember discussing that issue, querying why the decision was being communicated now and not then in October.
“It’s unfortunate; if they claim that the decision was made in October in Gulu, why wasn’t it communicated then? Why now?” They stated.
“Do you think if we (clubs) had known then, we would be quiet all this while? It’s a pity,” another argued.
Who is going on the continent?
Vipers, who debuted at the group stages of the CAF Champions League last season, claimed the league double, which means they will play in the CAF Champions League once more.
At the same time, KCCA FC, who finished second are expected to feature in the CAF Confederation Cup but they are yet to make up their mind on the development.
