Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has said that his team are moving in the right direction after netting against Leeds United in their impressive win on Monday night.

In the 35th minute, the Dutch forward scored from close-range to open the scoring which kickstarted a successful evening for the Reds at Elland Road. His goal was followed up by two goals each from Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota before Darwin Nunez added the last goal late in the Premier League match.

The three points came at a crucial time for the Reds as they push for European Football next season and Gakpo has steered his team to build on the strengths from yesterday’s performance.

Gakpo says the first goal is important to get your spirit high in away games

The 23-year-old was on target for his team and instrumental in Liverpool’s win over Leeds. He spoke about the importance of a first goal in an away game.

In an interview with Liverpoolfc.com, he said, "Everybody knows we struggled a little bit this season in the away games and then if you play a game like this tonight, this is the way it should feel every game. But it's a good step in the right direction.

"Especially in away games, the first goal is really important to get your spirit even higher and maybe [get] the crowd of the opponent a little bit down. We did it well and after we scored another one, a beautiful goal from Mo. In the second half, we just went for it and it worked out well.

"We won this game, it was a good game, but now we have to look forward and we have to win the next game."

Jota deserves the praise says Gakpo

Jota ended a long wait for a goal by helping Salah score his first of the game and then scored himself with a pair of well-placed finishes.

Still speaking, he said, "I think everybody was really happy for [Jota], He deserved it. He's working really hard in every game when he plays for the team. Eventually he got the two goals, so I'm really happy for him.

"I think we have a lot of options in the front three positions and I think it makes it even better for us to show [in] every game what you can do.

"Eventually, you have to do it together. So I think if we combine our strengths together, we have a good front three, or front six because we have a lot of options."
