'Come to Chelsea' — Why Mikel Obi's statement to Victor Osimhen is bad advice

Super Eagles and Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has advised Victor Osimhen to join the London club but here is why that could be bad for the Napoli man.

Ex-Nigerian football star John Obi Mikel has urged current Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen to join Premier League giants Chelsea.

Mikel who played for Chelsea for 10 and a half years between 2006 and 2017 hosted Osimhen on his show, "The Obi One Podcast" where the pair of Super Eagles stars had an hour-long chat.

A lot of interesting conversations were had between the pair for over an hour of episode three of the budding new podcast but Mikel's plea for Osimhen to leave Napoli and come to his former club, Chelsea is the more relevant topic to this article.

Mikel not only told the Napoli striker to come to Chelsea but also assured him that he would help facilitate the transfer.

“Next season, I know you’re gonna come to Chelsea. I’m telling you, I’m gonna be the agent to broker that deal. I’m gonna make sure that happens. We are crying out for someone like you — since Didier Drogba left the club,"  said Mikel.

Mikel's lighthearted advice to Osimhen was obviously from a good and probably even jovial place but here is why it is not the best thing for Osimhen's career.

Here are the reasons why Osimhen joining Chelsea would be a bad idea.

Why Osimhen to Chelsea is a bad idea

Strikers flop at Chelsea

The long list of centre-forwards who have come through the door at Stamford Bridge in almost two decades is already proof that this is not a good idea for Osimhen.

Mikel himself admitted it, "We are crying out for someone like you since Didier Drogba left the club," referring to Chelsea's failures in getting a permanent centre-forward solution since signing Drogba in 2012.

Other than a three-year spell from Diego Costa, the Blues have had multiple expensive attempts to end the striker curse that have all ended in failure.

Even though Mikel genuinely believes Osimhen has the requisite ability to be the exception to the Chelsea rule of bad strikers, the precedence should serve as a deterrent for the Nigerian.

Ability is hardly the reason strikers fail at Chelsea, Fernando Torres and Romelu Lukaku arrived at the club as the very best in their position but it still went horribly wrong.

Timo Werner, Alvaro Morata, Radamel Falcao, Demba Ba and Andriy Shevchenko are just some of the other high-profile strikers who have tried and failed at Chelsea, why would Osimhen want to be part of this unfortunate group?

Chelsea is currently unstable

Of course Mikel is a Chelsea fan so he does not see objectively that he is asking the current eighth best player in the world to leave the reigning Italian champions and join a team that is currently 10th on the Premier League table.

Chelsea are not in a position to attract world-class players at the moment which is reflected in their new transfer policy of signing youngsters with huge potential.

The best players in the world play for the best teams in the world and although Chelsea used to be in that bracket, those days are long gone.

Osimhen leaving Napoli to join Chelsea right now will be a step down for his career, especially since he has lots of better options available.

The 24-year-old is the current toast of Europe and at the end of the current season would only have one year left on his Napoli contract, putting the European giants on red alert.

Real Madrid, Liverpool and Arsenal are some of the European giants who could use a new world-class striker next summer, it would be incredibly unwise for Osimhen to pass that up to go to a struggling Chelsea team simply because Mikel asked.
