Kakamega Homeboyz find themselves at a crossroad after being warned against using goalkeeper Patrick Matasi amidst match-fixing allegations.

Kakamega Homeboyz have been cautioned against playing goalkeeper Patrick Matasi, despite the High Court lifting the 90-day match-fixing suspension imposed by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

FKF had handed the veteran Harambee Stars goalkeeper a 90-day suspension pending investigations into match-fixing allegations that had threatened to put his career into jeopardy.

This was after an undated video circulating online appeared to show Matasi in a conversation with an unidentified individual, allegedly discussing plans to fix a match.

Although the specific game in question remains unknown, the video seemingly captures Matasi receiving instructions to concede goals in exchange for an undisclosed sum.

Matasi moved to court and secured a stay order, technically clearing him to resume playing, following the suspension.

Despite the reprieve, the club has now been advised to tread carefully since every move made by Matasi will attract public attention leading to further scrutiny.

“This is a complex situation for the player, the club, and the federation. If he returns to action, every move he makes on the pitch will be scrutinized. Even a genuine error could be misinterpreted as deliberate,” sports lawyer Ken Ochieng told Mozzart Sport.

Ochieng, who doubles up as  Zoo FC chairman, expressed concern over the handling of such sensitive cases, maintaining that the federation lacks the resources to properly investigate match manipulation cases.

“If the allegations include matches outside FKF or police jurisdiction, the matter should be handed over to FIFA. Only they have the global reach and technical capacity to conduct a thorough probe,” he said.
