The Israel-Hamas conflict, ignited on October 7th, has so far resulted in numerous casualties and displaced over 20,000 people.

The eruption of a devastating political conflict in Israel has inadvertently swept up several Ugandans, including soccer professionals, placing them in a perilous situation.

The Israel-Hamas conflict, ignited on October 7th, has so far resulted in numerous casualties and displaced over 20,000 people.

Among those affected are Uganda Cranes forward William Kizito Luwagga and about 500 other Ugandans, who now find themselves stranded.

Luwagga, 29, currently engaged with the Israeli second-division team, Hapoel Rishon LeZion, is desperately attempting to navigate an exit from the conflict-stricken nation but has encountered a series of obstacles.

He has appealed to the Ugandan Government for intervention and support: “I have been trying to find my way out of Israel."

"But all my booked flights have been canceled. The most accessible flights only come to evacuate people," Luwagga told Pulse Sports.

He added: “My last resort is to go to the airport to try and see if I can find an available flight, but the other Ugandans need help because they are scattered everywhere; the Government needs to help out.”

Luwagga underscored the immediate risks and difficulties faced by him and his compatriots, with some residences lacking bomb shelters and essentials like food and water becoming scarce, the urgency of the situation has amplified.

“Some houses here don’t have bomb shelters, which is risky, so they need to be in one place, most preferably a bomb shelter, to get supplies like food and water,” he urged.

“I live next to a supermarket, but it has been closed for almost three days, and the neighborhood doesn’t have drinking water, so imagine what my fellow Ugandans are going through.”

In the realm of soccer, Uganda Cranes centre-back Timothy Awany, affiliated with Ashdod FC, has safely returned to Uganda.

Meanwhile, Aziz Kayondo, on loan at Hapoel Tel Aviv from CD Leganes, is currently with the national team in Bamako, Mali, preparing for Friday’s friendly game.

During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the Ugandan Government had extended financial assistance of UGX 200M to university students stranded in China.

The present situation in Israel has left many hoping for a similar intervention for Ugandans in need amidst the ongoing conflict.

Background of the Conflict

Hamas, the ruling Palestinian militant group in the Gaza Strip, originated from Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya, translating to the "Islamic Resistance Movement" and symbolizing "Zeal" in Arabic.

The group, steadfast in its objective to dismantle Israel, aims to establish an Islamic state in its place.

Since securing control in Gaza in 2007, Hamas has engaged in multiple wars with Israel, which has retaliated with airstrikes and deployed troops into Gaza during two of the conflicts.
