The Portuguese icon took to social media to address comments made by the Dutchman, who accused him of being “incredibly selfish” during their shared time at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Van der Vaart’s criticism of ‘selfish’ Ronaldo
Van der Vaart and Ronaldo spent a single season together at Real Madrid during the 2009/10 campaign, a year that ended without silverware for the Spanish giants.
Reflecting on that time during an appearance on talkSPORT, Van der Vaart did not mince his words about the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“Cristiano Ronaldo was incredibly selfish at Real Madrid,” Van der Vaart claimed, adding, “If we won 6-0 and he didn’t score, he wasn’t happy.
“But if we lost and he scored two, he was fine. Did he play just for himself? No, it was just his need to score goals.”
Ronaldo’s ruthless response
As Van der Vaart’s comments gained traction, Ronaldo wasted no time delivering a cold and calculated comeback.
Responding to an Instagram post about the Dutchman’s remarks, Ronaldo said, “Who is that guy?” dismissing his former teammate as just another nameless critic.
Whether Van der Vaart will respond remains to be seen, but Ronaldo’s response has already stolen the spotlight.
Ronaldo, who is going towards his 40th birthday in February, has also been shining on the pitch as well and was recently nominated for the FIFPro XI.
