Dani Alves has opted to change his defense strategy ahead of his trial in the rape case after seeing all his appeals for his release on bail rejected by the Barcelona court.

Dani Alves has reportedly changed his defense lawyer in the case that has kept him in provisional detention since January 20.

Alves has been charged over allegations of rape after being accused by a 23-year-old lady who says that he sexually assaulted her in the bathroom of the private room at the Sutton nightclub in Barcelona.

However, after seeing several of his appeals for his release on bail continuously rejected, the 40-year-old former Barcelona defender has now opted to change his legal representatives.

Dani Alves dismisses Cristobal Martel ahead of next year’s trial in rape case

Cristóbal Martell, who had been the head of Dani Alves’ legal team has now reportedly been replaced by the Brazilian footballer.

La Vanguardia reports that Alves has now hired another lawyer named Inés Guardiola.

The aforementioned outlet reported that Alves and his team had found out about Martel’s decision to leave the case precisely through the email in which the criminal lawyer requested to be withdrawn.

However, the decision is understood to have been Alves’ to make following the fact that different appeals filed by Martell to get him out on bail were unsuccessful, having spent over 250 days in Brians II prison.

Alves’ change of lawyer is now also said to influence his defense strategy to approach the case ahead of his upcoming trial which is expected to be held at the beginning of next year.

With Inés Guardiola leading the Brazilian's defense, La Razon reports that it is expected that this Martel’s strategy that was focused on discrediting the complainant will be abandoned and give way to one of a more technical nature which is based on refuting the evidence of the investigation.

Dani Alves could face up to 12 years in prison should he be found guilty of sexual assault.
