Former football star Dani Alves faced a day in court as the first proceedings of his ongoing rape trial began.

The 40-year-old former Barcelona, Sevilla, and Brazil defender has been accused of rape and has spent the past year behind bars awaiting his day in court, with authorities citing concerns about him being a potential flight risk.

Dani Alves' lawyer claims former Barcelona star is broke

According to reports by MD, Dani Alves will be the last to testify in the case, which includes a total of 28 witnesses. Notably, among those witnesses is his estranged wife, Joana Sanz, who separated from him following the scandal that shook his reputation.

One of the most startling revelations during the trial came from Alves' own lawyer, who claimed that her client had a negative bank balance of €20,000 and had legal embargoes on assets worth €50,000. However, Marca reports suggest that Alves' overall fortune still amounts to approximately €55 million. This stark financial contradiction has raised eyebrows and added another layer of intrigue to the case.

The defense presented several arguments in Alves' favor, including claims that he was not given the right to a fair and equal trial. Firstly, they pointed out that Alves was not subjected to a blood test for alcohol and other drugs, which could potentially have been considered an extenuating circumstance and led to a reduced sentence.

Secondly, Alves' legal team argued that the media trial had been unfair and unequal, portraying him as an aggressive rapist without presenting all the facts. They also disputed the number of testimonies Alves provided regarding the events of the alleged incident, asserting that only two testimonies were given, rather than the five that had been reported publicly.

Prosecution rubbishes claims about Alves’ finances

In response, the prosecution dismissed claims of Alves experiencing financial difficulties and stressed that Alves, as a public figure, had been afforded all the same rights as any other person involved in a legal proceeding. Despite the defense's objections and claims, the judge overseeing the trial rejected the request for a delay or dismissal of the proceedings.

If Dani Alves is ultimately convicted of rape, he faces a prison sentence ranging from 9 to 12 years, along with a hefty compensation payment of €150,000 to the victim. As the trial unfolds, it will continue to draw significant attention from both the football world and the public, and its outcome will undoubtedly have a profound impact on Alves' future and reputation.
