Liverpool’s surge in the second half secured a win against Newcastle despite playing with 10 men.

Liverpool were looking to make it two wins out of two and got their second win of the season against a formidable Newcastle side.

Eddie Howe’s side did not do enough to see off Jurgen Klopp's side despite the Reds having a man down very early in the game.

Liverpool’s late push in the second half was enough to secure a 2-1 win against Newcastle at Saint James Park.

Anthony Gordon scored the first goal of the game for Newcastle before Van Dijk’s sending-off. However, Liverpool did not lose hope and got two goals in quick succession from Dawin Nunez.

As it happened

Eddie Howe named an unchanged Newcastle United starting lineup after last weekend's defeat by Manchester City.

Brazilian midfielder Joelinton kept his spot despite being forced off through injury against Man City.

Diogo Jota was benched by Jurgen Klopp as he made two changes to the Liverpool side who beat Bournemouth last time out.

Wataru Endo and Joel Matip came into the starting lineup while Ibrahima Konate was absent due to a muscle problem.

The game started with an end-to-end attack from both sides but none of them could break the deadlock.

However, in the 26th minute, former Blue Anthony Gordon hits the Reds with a hammer blow.

Trent Alexander-Arnold made an error with the ball sneaking under his boot - that allowed Gordon to charge away and into the box before slotting a shot under Alisson and in.

The next minute, Liverpool were thrown into turmoil when the Reds were shown a red card by the referee.

Virgil van Dijk was shown a straight red for going through Alexander Isak as he sought to get on the ball and in on goal. VAR looked at it and agreed with the referee’s decision.

Liverpool came back strong in the second half despite having an early red card shown to Van Dijk.

Darwin Nunez was brought in to replace Alexis Mac Allister in the 77th minute to help Liverpool in attack.

Their pressure paid off in the 81st minute when the ball broke into the path of Darwin Nunez who moved past Sven Botman as Diogo Jota threaded a pass through.

It gives the recently-introduced forward room and a sight of goal and he takes full advantage with a rasping drive into the far bottom corner.

Shortly after, in the 93rd minute, Nunez was found in the box again by Mohamed Salah but did not hesitate and lashed in a shot past Nick Pope.

The referee blew the final whistle as Liverpool completed a miraculous comeback with ten men against Newcastle.
