Mamelodi Sundowns Ugandan shot-stopper Denis Onyango has expressed his appreciation to the club's loyal fans following their 1-0 win over rivals Orlando Pirates on Wednesday at the Orlando Stadium.

Lucas Ribeiro scored the game's only goal from 12 yards after 12 minutes, and Onyango says the early goal helped the side settle the nerves and lift the team.

"We suffered in a few moments because they put a lot of pressure on us, but thanks to the fans who came in numbers, they lifted the boys and managed to get the win and a clean sheet, which was important," Onyango told club media.

The 37-year-old former Uganda Cranes captain, who made the bench but didn't feature, added that teamwork was crucial as everyone gave their best.

"The early goal helped us settle in, good fight from the boys; everyone was fighting for each other, which is key at the club; we always give our best, the confidence and hard work helped us win."

The win also equalled a league record set by traditional giants Kaizer Chiefs, which is going 31 games without defeat.

Rulani Mokwena's side, who last lost a league game in September 2022 against SuperSport United, have now picked up 25 wins and six draws, equalling Chiefs' run from 2005, who went unbeaten between 15th January 2005 and 16th November 2005, picking up 15 wins and 16 draws.

The Brazilians, chasing an unprecedented seventh straight league title, are also set to face Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday in the MTN 8 semi-final second leg, with the first leg having ended 1-1.

Edson Castillo opened the scoring for the glamour boys before Khuliso Mudau levelled matters at the death.

Masandawana is also set to feature in the inaugural CAF African Football League, where they face Angola's Petro Atletico in one of four quarter-finals, which will be played on a home and away basis.
