Pulse Sports looks at the only five Ugandan players that have reached the semifinals of both interclub competitions since they were renamed.
CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.
DENNIS MASINDE ONYANGO (MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 2016, 2018/19).
He needs no introduction to the African continent, let alone Uganda; Onyango is regarded as Uganda’s best football export because of his exploits with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Onyango became the first Ugandan player to win the CAF Champions League when he guided his Mamelodi Sundowns side to the 2016 title beating Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate.
The former Uganda Cranes captain was on the verge of repeating the feat with Sundowns in the 2018/19 season.
Still, they were eliminated by Wydad Casablanca in the semifinals 3-2 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 on aggregate.
YUNUS SENTAMU JUNIOR (AS VITA 2014).
Vipers’ current hitman was once on the big stage, back in 2014 when Sentamu was the hottest property on the African continent after scoring three goals for Uganda at the 2014 CHAN tournament; he was linked to several top clubs but settled for AS Vita on a four-year deal.
Sentamu went on to score the winner against Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien as Vita reached the final 4-2 on aggregate; they lost 1-0 on aggregate to Tunis Esperance in the final.
JOSEPH OCHAYA (TP MAZEMBE 2018/19).
The Uganda Cranes left-back was pivotal for the DR Congo giants in the 2018/19 CAF Champions League campaign.
Mazembe topped Group C with 11 points; they also recorded their biggest win in the group stage when they beat Club African 8-0.
They reached the semifinals but lost 1-0 to Tunis Esperance, who beat Wydad to clinch their fourth title.
CAF CONFEDERATIONS CUP.
KHALID AUCHO. (YOUNG AFRICANS, 2023).
The Uganda Cranes assistant captain is on the books of Young Africans.
He has played a pivotal role in guiding the ‘Teamu you Wanainchi’ to their first-ever semifinal of the CAF Confederations Cup.
‘Daktari wa mpiira’ has featured in all but one game against TP Mazembe, the final group stage match en route to Yanga reaching the semifinals.
ISMAEL WATENGA. (MARUMO GALLANTS, 2023)
The 27-year-old former Vipers goalkeeper is on loan at Marumo Gallants from Mamelodi Sundowns.
Watenga has not featured for his side in the CAF Confederations Cup this season because he is just returning from an injury layoff. Still, he has made the bench of most of the games, deputising first-choice and captain Washington Arubi.
