The Super Eagles' victory over Spain remains one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, but can the Super Falcons replicate the feat at the same stadium?

On Sunday, in the picturesque city of Nantes, the Stade de la Beaujoire prepares to host another high-stakes Olympics football clash as the Super Falcons of Nigeria face Spain in a match that stirs echoes of a historic encounter that took place 26 years ago.

In June 1998, this very stadium witnessed one of the most memorable matches in World Cup history when Nigeria's Super Eagles triumphed over Spain in a thrilling 3-2 victory.

The story of that day remains etched in the annals of football, and as Nigeria and Spain prepare to meet again, the air is thick with nostalgia and anticipation.

A flashback to France '98

The year was 1998, and the World Cup fever had gripped the globe. Nigeria, under the guidance of coach Bora Milutinovic, arrived in France with a squad brimming with talent but marred by inadequate preparation.

The Super Eagles had missed out on the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations due to a ban following their withdrawal from the 1996 tournament.

Their lead-up to the World Cup was far from ideal, with a series of uninspiring friendly matches that culminated in a 5-1 drubbing by the Netherlands. Spirits were low, and expectations tempered as they stepped onto the pitch against a formidable Spanish side.

Spain, undefeated in their European qualifiers, entered the tournament with high hopes. The match against Nigeria was seen as an opportunity for La Furia Roja to assert their dominance.

Super Eagles’ dramatic win over Spain

The game started with Spain in control, and it wasn't long before Fernando Hierro's free-kick gave them a 1-0 lead. The Spanish fans erupted, believing their team was on the path to victory.

However, Nigeria quickly responded. Just three minutes later, Mutiu Adepoju's powerful header levelled the score, silencing the Spanish supporters and injecting hope into the hearts of Nigerian fans.

The second half began with Spain again taking the lead, courtesy of a Raul Gonzalez goal. The young Real Madrid striker capitalised on a precise through-ball from Hierro, smashing it past Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Rufai. At this point, it seemed Spain would secure a comfortable victory. But football, in its unpredictable glory, had other plans.

In the 73rd minute, Garba Lawal's seemingly innocuous cross turned into a game-changing moment. Spanish goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta, one of the most experienced players on the pitch, mishandled the ball, inadvertently scoring an own goal.

The stadium gasped, the match was tied, and suddenly, the momentum had shifted. The drama didn't end there. Just five minutes later, Sunday Oliseh produced a moment of magic.

From around 30 yards out, Oliseh unleashed a thunderous strike that sailed past Zubizarreta, who could only watch as the ball nestled into the net. The goal not only secured Nigeria's victory but wrote itself, goalscorer Oliseh, and the Super Eagles into World Cup folklore.

The Super Eagles went on to top their group but were later eliminated by Denmark in the Round of 16, after a humbling 4-1 loss in a match marred by off-field controversies.

Despite this, the victory over Spain remained a highlight of Nigeria's World Cup journey, celebrated not just for the result but for the sheer excitement and quality of the football displayed.

Sunday Oliseh's goal, in particular, has been replayed countless times and is a source of pride for Nigerians and a reminder of a golden era.

Super Falcons set for Beaujoire adventure

Fast forward to July 28, 2024, and the Stade de la Beaujoire is set for another Nigeria vs. Spain showdown. This time, it's the Super Falcons, Nigeria's women's national team, taking centre stage against a Spanish side that recently clinched the World Cup.

The stakes are high for Nigeria, needing a win to keep their Olympic hopes alive after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Brazil in their opening match. For Spain, leading Group C with a 2-1 victory over Japan, the match is an opportunity to continue their dominance and qualify for the second round.
