Uganda Cranes defender Gavin Kizito suffered a set as Uganda prepared for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier against Tanzania in Egypt in early April.
The former U17 and U20 skipper tore a muscle in his thigh during Cranes’ training in Ismailia which kept him out of action for close to six weeks.
Before the injury, Kizito had started twice for this Egyptian side Al Ittihad, in the 2-1 win against Al Daklyeh and in played 82 against El Gaish as his side won 4-3.
“Getting injured at such a time was tough,” Kizito told Pulse Sports before adding.
“Especially when I had started getting playing time in my club and getting the attention of the national team coaches.”
“But I told myself that this was part of the game and focused on getting better with a positive mindset,” added the former SC Villa player.
During that period, Kizito missed seven games for Al Ittihad but his recovery process had him get playing time in a few friendly games.
With Al Ittihad fifth on the Egypt Premier League log with 40 points, three off fourth-placed Zamalek, and with a game in hand, Kizito wants to help his side secure a place in the CAF Confederation Cup at least.
“We need to keep pushing, that is the target of the team and I want to be part of it.”
“Focus now is to get back to full fitness because that is the only way I will be able to get playing time,” added the defender who can play both in the middle and on the right side of defence.
The top two sides in Egypt qualify for the CAF Champions League while the third and fourth qualify to play in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Al Ittihad have nine games to go and will play against Derrick Kakooza’s ENPPI on May 15th before facing Al Masry on May 22nd.
The side is also in the quarterfinals of the Egypt Cup.
