Harambee Stars striker Elvis Rupia has received high praise after scoring twice to help Singida Fountain Gate to the biggest victory in the history of Mapinduzi Cup
Singada Fountain Gate FC president Japheth Makau has expressed his delight after his team began the Mapinduzi Cup with the biggest ever win at the tournament.
Kenyan striker Elvis Rupia put in a man of the man performance as he scored twice to help Singida Fountain Gate FC to a 4-1 win over Zanzibar’s JKU on Friday night.
Rupia opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Singida took a 1-0 lead into the break before sealing his brace four minutes after restart.

JKU pulled one back courtesy of Saleh Masoud on the hour mark but two late goals from former Gor Mahia striker Medie Kagere and France Kazadi ensured Singida carried the day in their tournament opener.
“If you have a good team that does well you have to be happy,” Makau told the club’s media.
“We came seriously for this competition, last year, we reached the final but now we want to do even better and to do that, you must start well so thanks to the boys who have started with a big win.
“This [JKU] was a feared team, we met in the early rounds CAF Confederation Cup this season, we beat them in the first leg and they defeated us in the return match so it was a tough one considering they were at home.”
It was the first Mapinduzi Cup appearance for Rupia who joined the Tanzanian side at the start of this season after emerging the Golden Boot winner in the FKF Premier League last season with a record 27 goals while at Kenya Police FC.
Rupia was awarded Tsh500,000 (Ksh31,274) for his man of the match performance which will inspire him ahead of their next group games against Simba SC and APR of Rwanda.
Another Kenyan player Duke Abuya, who also joined Singida this season from Kenya Police, had his first taste of the tournament when he started in midfield but there was no place in the squad for former Gor Mahia defender Joash Onyango who is on loan at the club from Simba.
Mapinduzi Cup is an annual competition which forms part of the anniversary celebrations of the Zanzibar Revolution, which expelled the Sultan from power on January 12, 1964.
The 2023 edition is the 60th anniversary of the celebrations with all matches being played at the recently refurbished Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, whose capacity was expanded to 15,000.
