England have unveiled Lee Carsley as their new coach, on an interim basis, ahead of the UEFA Nations League

Lee Carsley has been named England’s interim manager following Gareth Southgate's departure.

The Football Association (FA) is giving Carsley a chance to prove himself with the team during the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Finland and the Republic of Ireland.

Carsley, who has been praised for his achievements with the England Under-21 team, will guide the squad while the FA searches for a permanent successor.

Carsley, previously the Under-21 coach, led the Young Lions to victory in the 2023 European Championship.

His tactical prowess and ability to connect with players have garnered him significant acclaim, with notable endorsements from players such as Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon and Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.

The FA’s technical director, John McDermott, worked to keep Carsley in the England setup despite interest from other clubs and national teams.

Carsley’s familiarity with the current squad and international football dynamics positions him as a strong candidate for the interim role.

Ashley Cole, the former Chelsea and Arsenal defender, is expected to join Carsley as his assistant, providing additional support and expertise.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham expressed confidence in Carsley’s capabilities, highlighting his strong interim credentials.

Carsley has expressed his honor at stepping into the role, focusing on maintaining continuity and achieving promotion in the Nations League.

His appointment offers the FA time to assess options for a permanent manager while ensuring stability in the interim.
