STARS ABROAD Erick 'Marcelo' Ouma set for landmark transfer to Polish champions from AIK
Harambee Stars' defender Erick 'Marcelo' Ouma is nearing a significant transfer from AIK amidst interest from several European clubs.
“We are pleased to announce that Erick Otieno is our second winter signing this season,” Czestochowa Sporting Director Samuel Cárdenas said on the club’s website.
“Erick has been a standout player in his position in recent years in Sweden. Now there is an opportunity for him to join us. Erick is a player who fits our philosophy perfectly. He is fast, aggressive and always plays with intensity.
“Thanks to his qualities on the ball and his consistent play with both feet, he will be an option for both sides as a shuttle player in our system.
“We are looking forward to seeing Erick in our jersey because he is eager to fight for more titles and prove his worth in the European arena, commented sports director Samuel Cárdenas on the transfer.”
Ouma joined AIK in 2020 from another Swedish club Vasalund and made 104 appearances for the side, scoring four goals while providing 15 assists.
He has been a standout performer at AIK, attracting attention from various clubs across Europe, including Spain's Espanyol, but it is the Polish champions who won the race for his signature.
“Poland is a good league and I am proud to be in this great team which is doing well and playing good football,” Ouma said of his new club.
“I have not spoken to anyone because I think Poland and Sweden is the same the kind of weather is quite similar. Bartosz (Cekus) is a good coach, we had a good cooperation and enjoyed good moments while at AIK.”
AIK are set to receive a substantial transfer fee for the player with Vasalund also guaranteed a 30 percent share of the windfall.
“We wish Erick the best of luck with his next step in his career. At the same time, we want to thank him for his fine efforts over the years in AIK,” said AIK Sporting Director Thomas Berntsen.
The Kenya international thanked the Swedish club for giving him the opportunity to don the black and yellow shirt.
“I just want to say that I have enjoyed every moment in AIK during the four years that I have been here. Every moment meant a lot to me. I appreciate and want to thank all the supporters for the support during my time in AIK, it has been huge,” said Ouma.
Czestochowa, who featured in the UEFA Europa League this season before being knocked out at the group stage, are fourth in the Polish top flight with 32 points, nine behind leaders Slask Wroclaw with a game in hand.
