The deposed captain was set to leave AFC Leopards at the end of the season after the National Executive Council sought to strip him of the captaincy.

AFC Leopards midfielder Eugene Mukangula says he still has a contract with the club and will leave when it expires and not any second before.

Mukangula was stripped of the captain’s armband, with Peter Thiong’o suffering the same fate in his vice-captaincy role in June, with a subsequent announcement by the club being released saying both would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Leopards Secretary General Gilbert Andugu revealed that they would be leaving after the club’s National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved to strip Mukangula of his captaincy for ‘’failing to show leadership’’ to the rest of the team.

Since he was given the captain's armband in 2022 thanks to the exit of Marvin Nabwire who joined Kenya Police FC, Mukangula has been instrumental to the Patrick Aussems-led team both on and off the pitch including scoring crucial goals.

According to Andugu, the two were at the forefront to incite other players not to attend their training sessions which is unacceptable.

It is believed that the two took that route with the understanding that their contracts are running out and should they leave they will not be able to get their money.

Speaking to Pulse Sports after helping his side secure third place in the 2022/2023 Mozzart Bet Cup as his goal was enough to give them a 1-0 win over Ulinzi Stars, Mukangula said that he will be at the club until the expiry of his contract.

“The game was tight. They gave us a run for our money but in the second half, we came out with the urge to score. That is why we tried to score a goal early in order to become more comfortable with our style of play.”

“It is good to have finished third in the competition. It was not part of our original plan but our efforts were rewarded.

“I am still an AFC player. I have a contract that is running. I have not said I am leaving. For now, I just want to rest and spend time with my family.”

Mukangula joined Leopards in 2018 from Thika United and has spent five years at the club.
