The forward scored the opening goal of Sunday’s loss, equalling the injured centre-forward’s Euro 2012 achievement.

Poland’s Adam Buksa found the back of the net in the 16th minute of Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by the Netherlands to match Robert Lewandowski

Poland vs Netherlands

Buksa opened the scoring at Volksparkstadion after 16 minutes, latching on to Piotr Zielinski’s inswinging corner to head the ball beyond Bart Verbruggen

However, the Dutch turned the game around through Cody Gakpo's 29th-minute leveller and Wout Weghorst, who netted with his first touch with seven minutes of the 90 remaining.

It stayed that way despite Poland’s coming close in the game’s closing stages, inflicting a defeat on Michal Probierz’s troops in their Group D fixture.

How did Buksa emulate Lewandowki?

Buksa’s early strike meant a Poland player has netted a first-half group-stage goal for the Eagles since Euro 2012. Lewandowski scored a 17th-minute goal in the White-Reds’ home tournament against Greece, a 1-1 draw in Warsaw.

Preceding Buksa’s goal, Poland’s seven goals in the group phase had been in second halves, ending the Eagles’ wait since the 2012 showpiece on home soil.

What comes next?

Probierz’s men hope to have Lewandowski back against Austria on June 21 before their final Group D match with France four days later.
