Barnabas Varga has reportedly been taken to hospital and is recovering after his horror collision
Hungary's striker Barnabas Varga is reported to be in stable condition in hospital following a horrific collision during Sunday’s Euro 2024 victory over Scotland.
Varga suffers horror injury
The 29-year-old was involved in a nasty clash with Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn while competing for an aerial ball at a free-kick 68 minutes into the Group A match. As Gunn attempted to punch the ball clear, Varga was left prone on the ground, prompting immediate concern from his teammates and medical staff.
The gravity of the situation was evident as Hungary’s players and medical team swiftly responded to Varga’s condition. Medics rushed onto the pitch to provide treatment, using blankets to create a protective screen around the injured player. The distress among the Hungarian squad was palpable, with captain Dominik Szoboszlai seen in tears as Varga received eight minutes of on-field medical attention before being stretchered off.

Following the final whistle, it was confirmed that Varga had been transported to a hospital in Stuttgart. The Hungarian Football Federation released a statement saying, “Barnabas Varga's condition is stable. The player is currently in hospital in Stuttgart. We will inform you immediately if there is any update about his status.”
Despite the unsettling incident, Hungary managed to secure a dramatic victory against Scotland, keeping their hopes of making it to the Round of 16 alive.
Substitute Kevin Csoboth scored the decisive goal in the 100th minute, with the delay caused by Varga's injury contributing to the extended stoppage time. In a touching gesture of solidarity, Csoboth celebrated the goal by holding up a shirt bearing Varga’s name and the entire team posed with the shirt after the match, dedicating their hard-fought 1-0 win to their injured teammate.
