FKFPL Evaluating early FKFPL performance of 'big' trio - Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, and Shabana

The FKF Premier League saw varied performances from Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, and Shabana in the opening matches.

Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL), often hailed as the crown jewel of Kenyan football, witnessed an intense start to the 2023/24 season, particularly with its historically dominant duo of Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, and the addition of fallen giants Shabana FC.

Their performances in the initial two match days highlighted not just their intent for the season but also how the shifting sands of football can make or break fortunes.

Gor Mahia, fondly referred to as K'Ogalo by their die-hard fans, began their title defense on a rather unsettling note. A team, often used to stamping their authority from the get-go, found themselves grappling with Sofapaka to a draw.

It was only in their second encounter that the defending champions managed to claim a victory, edging past Ulinzi Stars. The win, albeit narrow, sent a clear message: K'Ogalo might not always start with a roar, but they remain a force to reckon with.

Their fourth position, just two match days in, may not reflect their potential fully, but with four points in their kitty, they have certainly started their march.

On the other hand, AFC Leopards, with a legacy that has seen them often lock horns with Gor Mahia for league dominance, found themselves on a more slippery slope.

A somber start against FC Talanta, where they could not find the net, was followed by a disheartening loss to KCB. Positioned at a lowly 15th, the Leopards will surely be introspecting, figuring out their early jitters, and looking for ways to bounce back.

The upcoming match against Muhoroni Youth presents them with a golden opportunity, and one can expect the Leopards to come out with renewed vigour.

Shabana FC's tale has been one of heartbreak this season, at least in the beginning. Their match against Murang’a Seal, who have shown blistering form, ended in dismay.

Murang’a Seal’s dominance in the early days of the league has certainly been the talk of the town, and Shabana, unfortunately, found themselves at the receiving end. The redeeming part? The season is long and offers numerous chances for redemption.

The game against Kenya Police FC could serve as a pivot, a turning point that Shabana needs to re-establish their foothold.

All three teams have showcased varying degrees of potential, grit, and vulnerability. Gor Mahia’s draw and victory shows a balance of both challenge and triumph; AFC Leopards, with their early struggles, represent the unpredictability of football; while Shabana's early setback exemplifies the competitive nature of the league, reminding every team that no laurels are secure.

A particular highlight amidst the early drama was the display of individual talent. Nzoia Sugar's Obed Khakina emerged as a beacon of creativity, churning out two assists, showing why he could be the linchpin for his team this season.

In the backdrop of scintillating goals and playmaking, the unsung heroes between the sticks also grabbed attention. John Njau of Posta Rangers and Murang’a Seal’s Bernard Jairo demonstrated their mettle, keeping their nets untouched and making an early statement in the Golden Glove race.

Off the pitch, the league's recent partnership with Azam Media has been met with a blend of applause and scrutiny. The lucrative seven-year deal, worth an eye-watering $9.2 million, promises to enhance the visibility and reach of Kenyan football.

With Azam set to air four matches per round on its platforms, the world is poised to witness the fervor of Kenyan football up close.

But the ambiguity surrounding the broadcast of week three fixtures casts a shadow over this otherwise promising collaboration.

What is undeniable is the league's global allure, built on the back of intense rivalries and narratives. The Gor Mahia vs. AFC Leopards saga, for instance, has, over the years, provided fans with moments of ecstasy and heartbreak in equal measure.

Then there’s Tusker FC, another heavyweight, always lurking and waiting for their chance to stake a claim at the top.

Looking ahead, the upcoming fixtures promise more thrills. AFC Leopards will be eager to redeem themselves against Muhoroni Youth. The pressure will be palpable; a strong performance is imperative to inject confidence back into their campaign.

Gor Mahia, riding high after their victory over Ulinzi, will lock horns with Nairobi City Stars. This encounter will provide them with an opportunity to solidify their position near the summit of the table.

For Shabana, the upcoming duel against Kenya Police FC presents an opportunity to turn the tide. The Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay will echo with chants, urging their side to carve out a positive result

In the coming days, as the league resumes after the international break, all eyes will be on these three giants, alongside the other vibrant teams in the league.

The stadiums will reverberate with cheers, the turf will bear witness to both triumphs and heartbreaks, and the FKFPL will continue its legacy of enthralling football action.
