CAF shortlisted Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman, South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi, Ivory Coast winger Simon Adingra, and Guinea striker Serhou Guirassy as the contenders for the award.

Salah was a key figure for Liverpool and has consistently impressed with his performances both domestically and internationally. But despite his outstanding contributions, he was not included in the final five nominees.

Lavagne expressed his disappointment with CAF for excluding Egyptian star Mohamed Salah from the shortlist for the African Player of the Year award.

Lavagne in an interview with Foot Africa, stated his belief that Salah is the most deserving candidate for the award.

“Even though he was not shortlisted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), I think that the Egyptian Mohamed Salah fully deserves the trophy for best African Player of the Year.
