Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George lost his four-game unbeaten run against the Flying Antelopes.

In a highly anticipated NPFL clash, eight-time champions Rangers FC brought ended Finidi George and Rivers United's impressive unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday.

In the absence of Super Eagles assistant manager Fidelis Ilechukwu, the Flying Antelopes without some key players proved too difficult to break down by the league leaders.

The decisive moment came in the 15th minute when a long throw-in from Hillary Ekawu, who started the game following the absence of some key players off on national duty with Nigeria’s CHAN team, was expertly headed home by Rangers captain Chinemerem Ugwueze, sending the raucous home crowd into raptures.

Rivers United, under the guidance of former Super Eagles coach Finidi George, fought valiantly to find an equaliser but were denied by the resilient Rangers backline, led by the impressive Austin Opara and Super Eagles left-back Kenneth Igboke.

The hosts had another chance to double the score, with Godwin Obaje setting up Ekawu, but his left-footed effort narrowly missed the target. However, the Rangers' goalkeeper was the busier of the two shot-stoppers, making several crucial saves to preserve the lead.

The victory sees Rangers climb to third in the NPFL table with 27 points from 16 matches, extending their unbeaten run to nine games. 

Rivers United boss Finidi George's United are still at the top of the table.

For Rivers United, the defeat ends their impressive unbeaten streak, leaving them with work to do as they look to bounce back and maintain their challenge at the top of the league.

Rangers will now shift their focus to their upcoming clash against Katsina United while United host Kwara United in Port Harcourt.
