The legendary Kenya and AFC Leopards goalkeeper gives his opinion on why Kenyan football has declined
Former Harambee Stars goalkeeper Mahmoud Kenya One Abbas has slammed corruption in Kenyan football, citing it as the reason SuperSport stopped broadcasting the Kenyan Premier League.
The South African sports broadcaster had been beaming live the Kenyan Premier League up until 2017 after Nick Mwendwa took over the FKF office.

The former Gor Mahia forward is coming off an impeccable season where he won the Qatar Stars League Golden Boot.
The top flight was initially a 16-team league run by the limited company Kenya Premier League, where every top-flight club owned a share, but Mwendwa oversaw the return of the federation fully running the league after the expiry of KPL's contract in September 2020.
The former AFC Leopards custodian blamed corruption by the FKF under former boss Sam Nyamweya as the reason Kenyan football started deteriorating and sponsorships became difficult to come by.
“When I retired from football, I ventured into businesses and also earned a very lucrative job as a pundit for SuperSport, which was broadcasting KPL games, but politics and corruption came into the game during Sam Nyamweya’s reign,” he told Arocho Live.

FKFPL Olunga wants Kenya to become a mainstay at major tournaments
The Kenya Captain is relishing the role of making the side a constant presence at future challenges.
“Nyamweya meddled into the affairs of the Kenyan Premier League and Supersport, who were very much against the idea of corruption and greed given how learned and transparent they are. I saw with my own eyes what was happening, and that is why our football went on a downward trajectory.
“When SuperSport covered the KPL, players would be spotted worldwide every weekend. Nowadays, that is not possible. Even the commentators do not know how to commentate on the games!”
Abbas also blamed the general standard of investment in Kenyan football, even faulting the media for lacking adequate knowledge of the sport compared to earlier days.

“When you hear someone commentating, you feel happy and jovial, you are supposed to be given a clear image by the commentator as if you are actually watching the game, but nowadays, you see two different things!”
Abbas believes that for Kenyan football to improve, heavy investment must be made in the infrastructure. Kenya, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, bid to host the 2027 AFCON in May, with Kasarani, Nyayo, and Kip Keino stadia set to be renovated, but Abbas believes much more must be done.
“We need to invest in the infrastructure of the game. Conditioning the current and building more stadia must be adhered to.

Abbas is considered one of the greatest-ever goalkeepers to have donned the Kenyan national team jersey as well as AFC Leopards.
The Mombasa-born goalkeeper started playing for the Harambee Stars when he was 19 years old and went on to establish himself as a key figure.
