England's Harry Maguire is a proud man despite losing his position as the captain of Manchester United following a showdown talk with Erik Ten Hag.
England international Harry Maguire is unhappy with his manager Erik Ten Hag after being stripped of the captain’s armband at Manchester United.
Pulse Sports Nigeria reported that the world's most expensive defender will no longer captain the Red Devils following a showdown talk with Ten Hag.
This was revealed by the 30-year-old through a statement on his official social media account on Sunday afternoon.
Maguire reacts to losing United’s armband
Signed from now-relegated Leicester City for a record fee of 80 million pounds in the summer of 2019, Maguire was named United’s skipper a year later.
Ten Hag’s predecessor, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer handed the English the revered armband in January 2020 but that has now come to an end.
However, three years later, Maguire will step aside for a new leader in the dressing room following a clear-the-air talk with his Dutch manager.
Maguire took to his social media accounts to break the news himself and described it as extremely disappointing.
“After discussions with the manager today, he has informed me he is changing captain,” Maguire stated in a statement on his Twitter account.
“He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.”
Magure proud to have worn the armband
Despite his obvious disappointment, Maguire added that it has been the proudest moment of his career - leading the most successful club in England as the captain.
“Since the day I took on the role, three and half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date,” he added.
“It’s one of the greatest honours in club football. I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful - on and off the field.”
Solsjkaer shoutout
Maguire’s statement on Twitter concluded with a special shoutout to the man wo found him worthy enough to be United’s captain.
“I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support,” he concluded.
