Super Eagles star Frank Onyeka speaks on his Brentford career so far; the thrill of beating Manchester City twice and what is next for him in an exclusive interview with Pulse Sports.
Manchester City continues their treble charge with two trophies in the bag already but their near-perfect season has one blemish on it which is Brentford Football Club.
Brentford’s 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium on November 12, 2022, was the last and only time Manchester City lost at home in 30 games this season.
The Bees also became the only team to beat Manchester City twice this season with a 1-0 win on the Premier League final day and one man who was heavily involved in both games was Frank Onyeka.
The Nigerian international only started eight league games this season but two of them were against Manchester City, playing 87 and 81 minutes respectively in both games.
Frank Onyeka explains his role in Brentford beating Manchester City
The Nigerian midfielder was more than happy to break down his involvement in both wins against Manchester City exclusively with Pulse Sports Nigeria.
“I played up to 87 minutes against them…I mean it was quite amazing going to the Etihad to win, no one expected that but we did that, with teamwork and we just did what the coach asked us to do and everyone was happy after the game that we came out with a win at Etihad,” Onyeka said on the first game.
On the second game which was a 1-0 win at the Brentford Stadium, Onyeka had this to say:
“Actually, we were playing for something, for Europe and with a win and Aston Villa losing points might give us the chance to qualify for Europe but they won and we also won but for us, we wanted to do it like the only team to beat City home and away that’s why we went all in and yeah, everyone was happy after the game that we came out with a win.”
“Because this season was to finish in the top half of the league, now we have seen that we can do it, next season we push for Europe,” he said.
Frank Onyeka on life at Brentford and his future with the team
Onyeka spoke further about what it has been like playing for a Premier League club like Brentford in the exclusive interview with Pulse Sports Nigeria.
“I mean it is amazing, it is amazing, you know I played in Denmark, you can’t compare both leagues. Premier League is just, I will say the best league in the world …you can see the quality of players, the pitches, you know everything is just amazing,” Onyeka said.
The midfielder made it clear he has no intentions of leaving the club anytime soon, especially with three more years left on his current contract.
“No No No, at least I am still…I just got to the club...just 2 years in Brentford...so I am enjoying every bit,” Onyeka said refuting the idea of a transfer this summer.
“I mean, people don’t really see like… because when they see that I am not in the team, they feel like ‘oh, he is not good enough’ or you know this… It was due to injury, I was injured several times in Brentford and that is why most of the time I was not in the matchday squad,” Onyeka said explaining why he has been in and out of the team.
“I was always out but when I am fit I am always with the team and if I don’t start, I will come up off the bench, it is just the way it is at Brentford but all the same, I am very happy to be in Brentford,” the 25-year-old rounded up.
Frank Onyeka joined Brentford from Midtjylland for €10 million in the summer of 2021 and has played 47 games for the club in two years.
