Former Super Eagles midfielder John Mikel Obi slated players of African descent who represent non-African countries.

Super Eagles legend John Mikel Obi had strong criticism for players of African descent who chose to represent non-African countries.

Mikel, 37, was born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. He played across various age grades for the Nigerian national team and registered 89 caps for the Super Eagles.

The ex-Chelsea star has been one of the most dedicated servants of the Nigerian national teams. He famously bankrolled the Nigerian U-23 team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, underscoring his commitment to his country.

What Mikel said

The ex-Trabzonspor man voiced his frustration over what he sees as a lack of connection to their African heritage among players of African descent born outside the continent.

He criticises these players for not prioritising their African roots, instead opting to represent European countries, only to later turn to their African nations when their first choice fails to pan out.

“They want to play for England, France, whatever it is and then they wait,” Mikel said on the ObiOne Podcast

“When they get to 25 or 26 and they don't get a call up from England, then they call Nigeria. We shouldn't be treated as second options. You should be proud of your African roots, and you should be proud to represent your African country.

“If you decide you want to play for England, stick to it. Sit and wait, but don't wait till 29 or 30, you've passed your best, then you're like 'Oh, Nigerian FA I'm ready to play for you now, no, f--k off mate.”

Meanwhile, Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed to former Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel exactly where new Los Blancos signing Kylian Mbappe will fit into his already-stocked attack.
