The United boss is pleased with his captain, whom he describes as a big leader.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has termed criticism against Bruno Fernandes as 'crazy'.

The Portuguese international scored the crucial goal that not only handed the Red Devils a Premier League win but also helped them strengthen their Champions League bid.

Villa supporters kept deriding Fernandes, and he managed to silence them with the first-half strike at Old Trafford.

"He is so tough," said Ten Hag after the match. "A couple of weeks ago, there were questions about his captaincy, which was crazy because he is such a big leader.

"He leads by example, gives so much energy to the team, so much desire, and so much determination. If you want to win games and trophies, you need such players."

The Dutch tactician was pleased with how his players executed their game plan against Villa.

"Today, we played two halves, an impressive game. Big credit to the team. It was definitely one of our ideas for this game," he added.

"The lads did great with that organisation, attacking-wise. It could have been better. It can always be better. It was not always perfect, we had to score more, we know that, but finally, it was a success."

United fans’ protested and urged the Glazer family to sell the club, and when asked about the protests, Ten Hag said; "We felt really that the fans were behind us.

"We have to focus to be successful because that is what the fans expect and can expect. I'm sure when we get performances like we do all season, and the fans are behind us, there is a lot of energy and a strong bond between the fans and the players."

The Red Devils managed to end Villa’s 10-match unbeaten run, although the Villans are still in contention for European places.  Although Villa’s advantage over Brighton is only two points, the Seagulls have three games in hand.
