Goalkeeper Matthias Kigonya has come clean regarding his premature exit with Kenya Premier League side Sofapaka FC in January 2023.

The shot-stopper, who was in his second stint with 'Batoto ba Mungu', ended his four-month stay with the side on 27th January, announcing his departure via his official Twitter handle.

"I am notifying you about my departure from Sofapaka FC. It has been a short spell, but I liked it," read part of the statement.

Back in Kampala with his family, Kigonya says the premature exit was due to the club lacking finances.

"Well, football today is about money, I have a great working relationship with the boss (Kalekwa)," he told Pulse Sports before adding.

"but the reality was that the club lacked finances, so we both agreed to part ways. It is so tough to stay in a foreign country when you are not earning."

"I could have signed with another club because I had offers in Zambia and Tanzania, but I was a bit late to beat the transfer deadline."

"So I am currently doing personal training as I wait for the new season to start," added the former Bright Stars custodian.

Kigonya enjoyed two years with the Nairobi-based side between 2016 and 2018, but he has also had spells with Tanzanian side Azam FC and Nchanga Rangers in Zambia.

In 2021, Sofapaka FC, which Congolese businessman Elly Kalekwa owns, had a FIFA transfer ban imposed on them.

This was after Ghanaian player Jedinak Nana filed a suit with the football governing body after Sofakapa released him one year into his two year contract without compensating him.
