 As a player for the Super Eagles, he played as a right winger.

Born in Port Harcourt Finidi George is originally a native of Bayelsa State (Formerly in Rivers State).

The name Finidi translates into English as “a future full of the sun”.

Finidi played for three clubs in his country. 

In 1993, he arrived at AFC Ajax from Sharks FC for a reported €4,000 euros alongside compatriot and Super Eagles legend Nwankwo Kanu.

His impact with the Dutch giants was immediate as he scored four goals in 27 games to help them win the Eredivisie title.

 Sealing his place in the team as a starter, he appeared in consecutive UEFA Champions League finals, winning the 1994–95 edition against A.C. Milan

In July 1996, Finidi moved to Spain and signed with Real Betis for €10.4 million, as per Transfermrkt.

The deal would see him net in in three digits in nearly every season, with the Andalusians finishing fourth in his first year,

Before signing for Betis, Finidi was close to sealing a mega move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, but the deal fell through.

After Betis were relegated from the top flight in 2000, Finidi stayed one more year in Spain with RCD Mallorca whom he joined for €5.40 million, before signing for Premier League team Ipswich Town, managed by George Burley, in a deal worth €4.29 million.

Finidi George scored twice in a 3–1 victory over Derby County at Portman Road but was unable to replicate his brilliant form at Ajax, leading Ipswich to eventually suffer relegation.

In June 2003, Finidi was released by the club.

In November 2003, a 32-year-old Finidi George underwent a trial at former club Mallorca, after which he signed with the Balearic Islands team, helping them finally finish in 11th position after constantly battling relegation.

In the summer of 2004, Finidi George retired from professional football, having totalled 364 appearances scoring 81 goals and registering 33 assists.

In mid-November 2010, he returned to Betis as its director of international football, as he continued to live in Palma, Majorca, where he had relocated to after his retirement.

Finidi made his debut for the Nigeria national team in 1991, in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Burkina Faso, providing three assists for Rashidi Yekini and scoring once in a 7–1 rout. 

He helped the national team win the 1994 edition of the tournament in Tunisia, and also achieved one second and two third-place finishes.

Finidi represented Nigeria in two FIFA World Cups, 1994 and 1998.

In the former, held in the United States, as the national team won their group and exited in the round of 16 against eventual finalists Italy, he scored against Greece in a 2–0 win, proceeding to mimick a urinating dog whilst celebrating.

In the 1998 tournament in France, Finidi also played in all the matches, with Nigeria meeting the same fate at the hands of Denmark. 

Before the tournament, he already made the decision to quit international football prior to the competition, and earned a total of 62 caps.

As mentioned earlier, Finidi George retired from professional footballer in the summer of 2004, having last played for Real Mallorca.

He retired at the age of 33.

Before his appointment, Finidi George was the assistant coach to ex-Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro, and was the Interim coach who led the Super Eagles to beat Ghana 2-1 ending 18 years of unsuccessful attempts to defeat the Black Stars.
