Finidi George is expected to name his first squad as permanent coach of the Super Eagles coach this week, and the list will reportedly include four players from the NFPL.

New Super Eagles permanent head coach, Finidi George, has reportedly included four players from the Nigerian Premier Football League for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifier clashes against South Africa and Benin Republic.

Finidi names NPFL players

According to a report from Brilla FM, citing a source close to the team, Finidi’s squad list for the upcoming qualifiers will include four players currently plying their trade in the Nigerian top flight.

Nigeria play Bafana Bafana and the Cheetahs in June and Finidi is expected to name his first squad as a permanent manager for these fixtures within the week.

The inclusion of home-based players in the Super Eagles dynamics has always been a contentious topic.

Erstwhile manager Jose Peseiro infamously snubbed the NPFL. He failed to pick a single outfield player for the 40-man provisional squad for the AFCON, selecting three goalkeepers Ojo Olorunleke (Enyimba), Christian Nwoke (Sporting Lagos) and Amas Obasogie (Bendel Insurance).

For the final list that took the trip to Cote d’Ivoire, however, only Enyimba’s Olorunleke made the cut. Finidi, who won the NPFL with Enyimba, would already be showing his first-hand knowledge of the league, naming as many as four players in his first official squad as a permanent coach—in matches as significant as World Cup qualifiers at that.

Journey to USA/Mexico/Canada 2026

The Super Eagles missed Qatar 2022 after losing to Ghana in the playoffs. They have not started the qualifiers for the next edition of the Mundial encouragingly either, as they have failed to pick up wins in both the qualifier games they have played so far, only managing to draw against Zimbabwe and Lesotho.

They play South Africa in Uyo on June 3rd and next-door neighbours Benin seven days later on June 10th.

Nigeria are currently 3rd in Group C with two points. They are one point behind South Africa in second and two behind Rwanda in first.
