Football Kenya Federation delegates go to the polls to elect new leaders on Saturday December 7 and that decision lies in the hands of 90 men and women. But who are they?

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) delegates go to the polls on Saturday December 7 to elect new leaders who will manage the affairs of Kenyan football for the next four years.

The exercise will also see 10 National Executive Committee members elected but of interest is the presidential seat that has attracted eight candidates.

Who are the presidential candidates?

They are; Doris Petra, the outgoing Vice President, Extreme Sports CEO Hussein Mohammed and Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula.

Former Gor Mahia star Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino, Gor Mahis secretary general Sam Ocholla, ex-FKF CEO Barry Otieno, FKF head of youth football and ex-NEC member Chris Amimo and former FKF NEC member for Nyanza Tom Alila.

One of those seven men and a woman will become the new FKF president, taking over from Nick Mwendwa, whose eight-year term has come to an end, although he could bounce back in a different capacity, given he is Petra’s running mate.

Who will vote?

The fate of the eight candidates therefore lies in the hands of 90 delegates who have been cleared to cast their votes at the hotly-contested election at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

The 90 represent various interest groups in the Kenyan football pyramid and they have the big responsibility on their shoulders of deciding the direction the game will head in the next four years.

Where are the delegates from?

These delegates represent 46 branches, 43 clubs and there is representative from the Kenya Footballers’ Association (KEFWA).

The 46 branches are drawn from the 47 counties in Kenya with each county, apart from Nairobi producing one delegate. Nairobi is, however, divided into two, Nairobi East and West, making it a total of 48 branches.

However, two branches will not vote in Saturday’s election; being Homa Bay and Nyamira, whose branch elections had legal disputes that are yet to be resolved.

Of the 43 clubs, 18 are from all the FKF Premier League teams, whose representatives will either be club chairmen, vice chairman, executive officials or Chief Executive Officers at the polls, then there are 10 more delegates from the second tier National Super League.

Third tier Division One clubs will also have 10 delegates voting while there are three from the FKF Women’s Premier League, two from the second tier Women’s Super League and one from KEFWA represented by its president James Situma.

What is needed to win?

Given 90 delegates will vote, the candidate that garners 46 votes will be declared winner of the 2024 FKF presidential election.
