Historic sponsorship deal between FKF Premier League and KBC promises substantial financial boost, transforming Kenyan football's future.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba unveiled a staggering Sh1.6 billion seven-year free-to-air sponsorship deal between the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) at a press conference held at his Talanta Plaza offices in Nairobi on Thursday.

This monumental agreement, which marks a pivotal moment in the history of Kenyan sports, promises to inject Sh240 million annually into the FKF-PL, ensuring that each of the 18 participating clubs receives a substantial windfall of Sh10 million per season.

The ramifications of this game-changing deal extend far beyond financial benefits, as local football enthusiasts will now have the privilege of witnessing selected weekend matches via the national broadcaster, KBC, whose 11 sister radio stations have also been granted exclusive rights to provide live commentary on the matches.

Namwamba attributed the genesis of this transformative partnership to President William Ruto's vision for the advancement of Kenyan football.

"This was a brainchild of President William Ruto. For starters, teams are guaranteed 10 million shillings per club, on top of that teams will receive an amount depending on their position in the table at the end of the season," he said.

In a move aimed at fostering talent growth and development, Namwamba disclosed that a comprehensive package for the Women's Premier League (WPL), National Super League (NSL), and other lower leagues is currently in the works, aligning with the Ministry's ambition to nurture emerging talents through the Talanta Hela programs.

Under the terms of the agreement, KBC will broadcast a total of 68 matches, featuring two fixtures every match week, on both their television and radio platforms.

This extensive coverage is set to make Kenyan football more accessible to viewers in every corner of the nation, simultaneously elevating the commercial value of the league and contributing to the long-term goal of making the FKF Premier League self-sustainable, as emphasized by FKF President Nick Mwendwa.

President Mwendwa expressed his gratitude, stating, “The Ministry of Sports has been very supportive of the Federation’s football development programs at the national level, and for this, we say asante sana."

The Kenyan Broadcasting Channel, the country's premier national broadcaster, is slated to commence airing FKF Premier League matches from matchday 13 this weekend, setting the stage for an exciting new era in Kenyan football.
