FOOTBALL FKF selects experienced professionals in Electoral Board for upcoming polls

Football Kenya Federation has settled on professionals from diverse fields to conduct the upcoming hotly-contested elections.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has proposed an Electoral Board comprised of experienced professionals from various fields to oversee the upcoming elections.

Ahead of next month’s Annual General Meeting, the federation has named scholar Hesbon Owilla, communications expert Alfred Ng’ang’a, lawyer Marciline Sande, former AFC Leopards chairman Dan Mule and journalist James Waindi in the five-member Electoral Board.

Former FKF Vice President Robert Asembo and Farida Juma are the two standby members who will be incorporated in the board when the need arises.

The Electoral Board members have already been passed by the federation’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and will swing into action if they are ratified at the AGM set to take place on March 16 in Nairobi.

FKF rolled in motion the electoral process following a NEC meeting on January 6 in Nairobi, resolving that the elections, set to take place later this year, will be conducted using the FKF Electoral Code (2020) which was used in the last FKF elections.

The Electoral Code and Elections Board were the subject of a major tussle in the lead up to the 2020 polls when the Sports Disputes Tribunal ordered for a fresh process after nullifying the sub branch and branch elections which had preceded the national polls.

FKF went back to the delegates with a new code and a new board which was passed at a Special General Meeting and they seem keen to avoid another similar scenario.

The federation had come under fire from various candidates for delaying the process but contestants now have a clear roadmap towards the hotly-contested polls.

Extreme Sports CEO Hussein Mohammed, former Harambee Stars players McDonald Mariga and Dennis Oliech, Gor Mahia legend Sammy Owino ‘Kempes’, Murang’a Seal CEO Robert Macharia and Gor Mahia secretary General Sam Ocholla are some of those who have expressed an interest in the top seat.

Incumbent Nick Mwendwa has not spoken over his candidature although Sports Registrar Rose Wasike last month issued a directive saying that he is not eligible to contest, having served for eight years, but those within his circle have fired back, telling the Registrar not to ‘overstep’ her mandate.
