Nigeria have made it past the quarterfinal in 15 of the 16 editions of the tournament winning it in 1980, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2005, 2011 and 2015. They only missed in 2021.
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles head coach Ladan Bosso has warned his team not underestimate Uganda when the two meets in the quarterfinals of ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday in Egypt.
The Nigerians are looking to qualify to the FIFA U-20 World Cup for a record 13th time and will just need to overcome Uganda to achieve that fete.
Despite the Nigerians carrying the advantage on paper, Bosso has cautioned that the West Africans will not underrate the Hippos.
“The Ugandan team is equally qualified and they're our next opponents and we cannot underrate any team,” he told the media.
The Hippos are playing their 2nd finals after finishing second in 2021.
“We all know that Nigeria has qualified to the quarter-final stage and knowing fully that we have an objective of coming out of this place and the least task ahead of us is to pick one of the slots to the FIFA U-20 World Cup,” he added.
