Barcelona have had a break in their recent corruption case after a LaLiga referee denied the possibility of the Blaugrana bribing officials for favourable calls
LaLiga referee Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez has admitted to denying Barcelona a possible LaLiga title after making a shocking error during a match between the Blaugrana and Real Betis during the 2016/17 season in a bid to absolve the Catalan club of allegations of corruption and bribery.
Referee recalls errors made against Barcelona to highlight bribery inconsistencies
Barcelona’s Luis Suarez saw his effort cross the line against Real Betis, a goal which would have claimed all three points in the crucial match towards the end of that season, but referee Hernandez decided the ball had not gone into the net, a decision he now claims was a clear error.
Speaking to Cardena Cope, Hernandez recalled the error against Barcelona, noting that a mistake like that would not have been possible if the club had been involved in the practice of bribing referees.
Hernandez claims cheating allegations against Barcelona will fall apart
The match official said, “I’m on the edge of the box, and from my position, seeing if the ball goes in or not… It’s a blatant mistake, and it was during Negreira’s time, there was even a possible penalty against Neymar and nothing was called.
“Two weeks before, in a Sevilla-Real Madrid game, where I called a penalty in favour of Real Madrid in which my assistant told me ‘nothing, nothing, nothing’, all during Negreira’s time. All the arguments are falling apart.”
During the 2016/17 season, when the error was made, Barcelona went on to lose LaLiga by only three points.
The club has been embroiled in a bribery scandal over payments made to former refereeing chief Enrique Negreira, and they will be hoping testimony like Hernandez’ will help them porve their innocence.
