The 2018 World Champion with France was critical of his teammates' attitudes and said he would not be surprised if they got relegated
French World Cup-winning defender Adil Rami has claimed that he does not care if his current club Troyes get relegated from Ligue 1 at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, even as ESTAC struggle to stay up following a 13-game winless run.
Club captain Rami, who at 37 years old is as old as the club itself, stated that his career was winding down to a close, so the outcome of Troyes' season did not really bother him even as they are struggling to stay in the French top flight.
Rami does not care about Troyes’ fortunes after successful career
Rami, who has had a fulfilling career, winning the Ligue 1 title with Lille, as well as the UEFA Europa League with Sevilla, and the 2018 World Cup with France, was critical of his Troyes teammates' attitudes following another loss to Clermont, which has put their top-flight status at further risk.
Troyes fell to their eighth defeat in the last 10 Ligue 1 matches, leaving them 18th on the table, seven points behind Brest, who are 16th on the table and just out of the relegation zone for this season.
Rami was upset at the behaviour of some of the other Troyes players, whom he believes have given up on trying to save the club, and whom he said he felt pity for as they were throwing away their careers.
Speaking to Amazon Prime Video after the loss to Clermont, Rami said, “I don’t give a damn [if Troyes get relegated]. I am 37 years old, and my career is done.
“I don’t know if I’m sad for some players who are giving up on their careers. They will have to question themselves. The mentality is not good, and the defeat was logical.”
Rami believes Troyes can not stay up with current attitude
The former Marseille and Valencia defender also believed that the side needed to translate their discussions on the training pitch to in-game performances, instead of repeating the same mistakes week in and week out if they are to stay up.
“We can’t be sleeping on the details like this,” Rami declared, before adding, “We talk about it, but I have the impression that on the field, it goes in one ear and out the other.”
Speaking about the Clermont match, Rami said that he could not understand the reasons for the poor display and gave a damning assessment of the team saying, “We didn’t see a team that wanted to fight to stay up. We lowered our heads, and we gave them the match.
“I don’t know why. We didn’t show a good image.”
Troyes still to play against Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain, and Nice in their final games of the season, and if they do not improve on their current performances, they could be playing Ligue 2 football next season, not that this would bother their captain in the least bit.
