Okoth is being held at Pangani Police Station where the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continues its probe into the horrifying incident.
According to Daily Nation, the murder was initially reported to the Lucky Summer Police Station on April 22, 2024, by local assistant chief Peris Muthoni.
Police investigations at the scene revealed the young victim had bruises on her neck and was found in a disturbing state, half-naked and discarded behind the apartment where she lived.

Retired football star detained for investigation in Nairobi

Testifying before Makadara court, Police Constable Gilbert Kiprotich from the Starehe DCI offices stated that Okoth was apprehended after he exhibited suspicious behavior when a weapon believed to have been used to break into the child’s home was found.
Court documents reveal that Okoth who resided on the first floor of the same building as the victim was seen attempting to leave the premises with some of his belongings shortly before his arrest on April 23.
The former football star did not object to the court's decision to detain him for 21 days as the investigations continue.

The detailed police affidavit also noted that Okoth had left his apartment early on the morning of the incident carrying clothes in a nylon paper bag only to return a few hours later.
In pursuit of further evidence, the detective highlighted ongoing efforts to gather more information, including mobile data records and CCTV footage from the area, which are crucial for a thorough forensic analysis.
Okoth will be escorted to the Government Chemist for DNA testing and to Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital for a mental assessment before being presented to the court on June 3, 2024.
